How do I get marker out of a rug?

I am so frustrated. My son was coloring on the couch, I walked downstairs to heat up leftovers for lunch. I was gone 4 minutes! Can't take your eyes off them, I know...I know. I get back upstairs and there are long lines of black marker on my less-than-a-week old, blue and cream, $700.00 Belgian area rug! I only mention this to emphasize the frustration! My options for removal are very limited. I have zero hazardous cleaning products in my house. I DO have vinegar, laundry detergent, dish detergent, Shaklee product, and little rubbing alcohol pads that come in first aide kits. Those are the only things I can think that might help, but I am terrified of discoloring the rug (especially since the spots are so large)...and I don't know how to use them for this purpose. Thanks for the help!! I write that I only have the resources I do...A. to give you insight on what I have to work with...B. to let you sort of realize I am not buying anything new! Thanks...;.,

2. Borrow a rug doctor and buy stain remover the strongest one from supermarket like Woolworth's or Coles have one.
3. Dab the stain with some rubbing alcohol.=)
