How do you customize your own latch hook kit rug?

I want to make my own design of latch hook rug but how would i do that? Could I buy a design and then i could paint over it with the design I want and the chose my own colors for my design and start making the rug?

1. Purchase some grid paper and a package of different colored pencils or even markers, and create your design like a cross stitch pattern. "X" in or color in the square with the color you want.
